Children's Stories

To help support their family, Nirmala and her brother were brought to Kathmandu from their home in central Nepal. Upon arrival in the city, their mother forced the siblings to become domestic servants for a butcher and his household. Ten-year-old Nirmala and her brother suffered frequent beatings and verbal abuse from the butcher's wife. In exchange, Nirmala's mother received around five dollars each month for her children's labor.

Spotlight On Importers/Designers

Salman Khan and Kerry Smith

In 2001, while working and studying in Kathmandu, Salman Khan and Kerry Smith envisioned an approach to carpet-making based on the desire of customers for freedom of expression in designing their living and working environments. They named their venture Lapchi―Tibetan for "abode of creative energy"―and partnered with the GoodWeave® rug certification program to assure clients that their highly customized designs are accompanied by the best labor practices.
