goodweave competition boosted by rug industry

February 2010 – Jacaranda Carpets, the specialist rug and carpet manufacturer, and WovenGround.com, the acclaimed rug retailer, are co-sponsoring the 2010 annual GoodWeave rug design competition.

Open to undergraduate and postgraduate design students, GoodWeave uses the competition to raise awareness amongst students of the ethical issues surrounding rug production, whilst encouraging their design talent. All entries need to be in by May 21st.

This year competition entrants can opt for one of two design themes: industrial or organic, with mood boards and colour palettes provided for inspiration. A particular highlight of the competition will be an exhibition of the winning rugs hosted by Decorex International, at its London interior design show in September. The winning designs will be hand-knotted or hand-tufted at GoodWeave certified rug producers in Nepal and India.

Samantha Towle, Director of GoodWeave UK is delighted with the support the competition is receiving from the rug and design industry: "It is vital that our young designers are informed about ethical issues in the rug industry, such as child labour, the environment and working conditions, and that they realise, as professional designers, their responsibilities do not just stop with creating beautiful designs. GoodWeave is indebted to Decorex and our sponsors for their generosity and commitment".
