December 2009 – The latest retailer to sign up to the GoodWeave ethical labelling initiative is Modern Rugs, the online retailer, which offers a vast collection of over 10,000 rugs at www.modern-rugs.co.uk.
The company is now a Marketing Partner of GoodWeave, the newly expanded labelling scheme of RugMark, which is active in the rug industry of India and Nepal. The scheme aims to eradicate illegal child labour, and is increasingly involved in improving environmental standards and working conditions in the rug industry. By selling rugs with the GoodWeave label on the reverse, Modern Rugs is able to promise its customers that no illegal child labour was involved in their manufacture.
Ben Dale, Managing Director for Modern Rugs explains the company's rationale: "We feel that we have a moral obligation to ensure that the rugs we sell are free from any illegal child labour and that workers have a fair wage and good working conditions. By selling GoodWeave label rugs we can guarantee this and also educate our customers into making an informed decision when purchasing a rug".
